Early Life

Gabriel Afolayan was born on 1 March 1985 at Island Maternity Hospital, Lagos Island. He hails from Agbamu, in the Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. He is the son of Nigerian entertainment icon Adeyemi Afolayan, popularly known as “Ade Love.” His father was one of the pioneers of Nigerian cinema.

Gabriel was raised in Ibadan, where he completed his primary and secondary education. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan. He later studied Performing Arts at the Identity Drama School in Brixton, London. Notable alumni of that school include John Boyega and Letitia Wright.

Career

Gabriel Afolayan made his acting debut in 1990 as a child actor. He appeared in ‘F Opawon,’ directed by Baba Sala. Through the 2000s, he built momentum and became well known for the TV series ‘Super Story’ and the film ‘Madam Dearest.’

His breakout role came with the 2012 musical thriller ‘Hoodrush.’ The film earned him the Best Supporting Actor award at the 2013 Africa Movie Academy Awards. Since then, he has continued to build one of Nollywood’s most respected filmographies. In 2025, more than three decades after his debut, he won again at the 11th AMVCA.

Alongside acting, Gabriel maintains a parallel music career under the stage name G-Fresh. That passion began in 1997, when he joined a musical group in Ibadan. He also comes from one of Nollywood’s most prominent entertainment families. His brothers are filmmaker Kunle Afolayan and actor Aremu Afolayan. His sisters, Moji and Toyin Afolayan, are also actresses.
