Early Life
Okechukwu Ukeje hails from Umuahia, the capital of Abia State in southeastern Nigeria, but was born and raised in Lagos State. He is the second of three children.
He attended Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos, and began acting during his first year at the University of Lagos. Starting with stage plays, he built his career in theatre before transitioning to screen.
Career
Okechukwu Ukeje breakout film role came in White Waters (2007), where he starred alongside Joke Silva and Rita Dominic. This performance earned him the Africa Movie Academy Award for Most Promising Actor in 2008.
Alongside acting, Ukeje wrote music, collaborated with artists, and produced jingles for corporate brands. He appeared in several films and television projects between 2008 and 2012, including the Emmy-recognized series Wetin Dey, and films like Comrade, Confusion Na Wa, Awakening, and Black Novemberโwhere he shared the screen with international stars. He also starred in the acclaimed film adaptation of Half of a Yellow Sun and the British Film Institute-supported film Gone Too Far.
In theatre, he represented Nigeria at the London Cultural Olympiad in 2012. He gained further popularity through his role in the NdaniTV series Gidi Up. In 2014, he became one of the top box office grossers in Nigerian cinema. Two years later, the Toronto International Film Festival named him a โrising star,โ alongside Somkele Iyamah.
OC Ukeje lives in Lagos, Nigeria. He married Senami Ibukunoluwa Togonu-Bickersteth on 8 November 2014.
