Early Life

Kenneth Okonkwo, full name Kenneth Arinzechukwu Okonkwo, was born on 6 November 1968 in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria, to Mr Ozioko Francis Okonkwo and Mrs Beatrice Okonkwo. He completed his primary and secondary education in Lagos before proceeding to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, graduating as the best graduating student in his set. He later returned to the same university for a law degree and a Master’s in International Law and Diplomacy, before being called to the Nigerian Bar. He also holds a certificate in Theology from the Nigerian Bible School.

Career

Kenneth Okonkwo began his acting career in the early 1990s, taking small roles before his breakthrough in 1992 as Andy Okeke in ‘Living in Bondage,’ directed by Chris Obi-Rapu. The film is widely regarded as the movie that gave birth to the modern Nigerian film industry, and Okonkwo’s performance turned him into a household name almost overnight, with fans still calling him “Andy” decades later. He reprised elements of the role in the 2019 sequel, ‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free.’

Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s pioneers, Okonkwo has appeared in more than 300 films across three decades, including ‘Ripple,’ ‘Dumebi,’ ‘Silent King,’ ‘World Apart,’ ‘Helplessly in Love with My Wife,’ ‘Royal Secret,’ ‘Billionaires Club,’ ‘The Power of Money’ and ‘Husband Material,’ working alongside some of Nollywood’s biggest names including Patience Ozokwor, Pete Edochie, Mercy Johnson, Tonto Dikeh and Ramsey Noah.

In 2013, Kenneth Okonkwo received a Special Recognition Award from the Africa Movie Academy Awards for his contributions as one of the pillars of Nollywood, and two years later the City People Entertainment Awards honoured him with a special recognition award for his impact on the growth of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Law and Politics

Alongside acting, Kenneth Okonkwo has built a parallel career as a practising lawyer and member of the Nigerian Bar Association. He entered politics in 2014, running for a House of Representatives seat representing Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal Constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party. He later stated intentions to run for Governor of Enugu State, and became a prominent, outspoken voice within Nigeria’s Labour Party before later resigning from the party, a move he has publicly reflected on as a kind of personal liberation echoing his most famous screen role.

Personal Life

Kenneth Okonkwo married Ogechi Ezekiel, daughter of Pastor Ezekiel, General Overseer of Christian Pentecostal Mission International, in 2000. The marriage produced a son, Ifeanyi, before ending in divorce in 2002. He later remarried Ifeoma, and the couple have a son, Kenechukwu Isaac Chukwuchirimeze Okonkwo, who he has described as his best friend.

With a career spanning acting, law and politics, Kenneth Okonkwo remains one of Nollywood’s most recognisable pioneers and one of the few Nigerian entertainers to build an equally prominent public profile in law and civic life.
