Early Life
Charles Chibueze Chukwu, known professionally as Crayon, was born on July 8, 1997, in Orile Iganmu, Lagos State. He originally hails from Ebonyi State. At age seven, he relocated with his family to Ojo, Lagos, where he was raised alongside three siblings. He attended Treasure Court College for his secondary education and began nurturing his love for music early in life.
Career
Crayon joined Blowtime Entertainment, an imprint of Mavin Records, in May 2019. His debut EP, Cray Cray, dropped in July that year, introducing his vibrant sound to the Afropop scene. In March 2021, he released the single “Jackpot” featuring Bella Shmurda, ahead of his second EP Twelve A.M. His 2022 hit “Ijo (Laba Laba)” soared to number 5 on the Turntable Top 100, solidifying his position in the industry.
Crayon released his debut album Trench to Triumph as a reflection of his challenging journey, growing up in a small apartment with nine people and fighting to find his voice in music. Discovered by Mavin’s in-house producer Baby Fresh, Crayon navigated early struggles, including depression in 2015 after failing to gain university admission.
In 2023, Crayon opened up about his battle with drug addiction. He recounted a breakdown outside his label’s office that led to psychiatric care. Fellow artist Rema stepped in during that crisis, offering support that Crayon called life-saving. He credits this moment as the turning point that restored both his personal life and music career.
Crayon’s story is one of resilience, rising from personal battles to inspire through music and honesty. His journey continues to connect deeply with fans across the world.
