Early Life
Ugochi Lydia Onuoha, known professionally as Guchi, was born in Kaduna in 1997. She grew up in Abuja and hails from Mbaise in Imo State. Guchi is the second of four children in her family. Her musical journey began at age seven when she sang in the church choir and performed for her grandparents. Inspired by Michael Jackson, whom her father admired, she developed a unique sound that blends energy, rhythm, and emotion. She started university at Edo State University and later continued studying Theatre and Media Arts part-time at the University of Lagos after moving to Lagos.
Career
Guchi began her professional music career in 2012. She fuses Afropop with dancehall and highlife, creating a signature sound that resonates widely. In April 2019, she released her debut single, No Be Jazzy. That same year, after signing with PG Records Entertainment, she followed up with Addicted and Closer. Her debut EP, I Am Guchi, came out in October 2020 and showcased her versatility.
Her breakthrough came in 2021 with the hit single Jennifer, which went viral on TikTok and was later remixed with Tanzanian artist Rayvanny. She continued to rise with Benzema, which debuted at number 3 on the Billboard Top Triller Global Chart. In 2022, she featured on Rayvanny’s Sweet and released her own single, Shattered. In January 2020, Guchi was named a two-year ambassador for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Guchi continues to solidify her position in the Afropop scene with passion, consistency, and a growing global fan base. Her voice, style, and story make her one to watch.
