Veteran Nigerian entertainer CharlyBoy is taking on a new mission. The music legend, whose real name is Charles Oputa, has launched a nationwide campaign to save men’s lives. This comes after he survived prostate cancer himself.
Speaking passionately, CharlyBoy said too many Nigerian men are dying in silence. They don’t talk about their health issues, especially prostate cancer. For him, it is time to change that. Through his Charly Boy Foundation, he is creating awareness about men’s health, focusing on prostate health, mental health, and diabetes.
“We are in the middle of a silent epidemic as many of our men are dying in silence because they don’t talk about their health,” he said. He added that most men ignore their health until it becomes serious. Poverty also stops many from seeking help early.
CharlyBoy believes sharing his personal journey will encourage other men to go for screening. He said, “Most men shy away from taking good care of their mental and physical health, but as I share my experience, they too can be more health conscious as they age.”
His foundation now runs mobile screening outreaches in rural communities. It also holds public campaigns and partners with labs to bring tests closer to people. He called on wealthy Nigerians and government agencies to support this cause. He said his team encourages those who contact them by covering parts of their medical bills.
Dr. Doris Udenzi-Davis, CEO of the CharlyBoy Foundation, shared that over 500 men have benefited from their free screening so far. She explained that their goal is to educate men about prostate cancer, its risks, and why early detection matters. However, they need more funds and volunteers to expand their work nationwide.
CharlyBoy said this campaign is the most important work of his life. He urged everyone to join the fight. “Men are going through quite a lot, and it’s time we all act to save them,” he said.
