Crude oil production in Nigeria has dropped again, raising fresh concerns about the country’s energy sector and the wider economy. According to the latest Monthly Oil Market Report by OPEC, crude oil output fell to 1.39 million barrels per day in September 2025. This is down from 1.434 million barrels per day in August, marking the lowest level in seven months.

This decline is tied to several persistent challenges. Crude theft, pipeline vandalism, and technical issues at key oil terminals have made it difficult to maintain stable output. The situation worsened following a three-day strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria. The strike disrupted operations and forced several facilities to shut down.

The timing of this decline is critical. The Nigerian government relies heavily on oil revenue to fund its 2025 budget. Oil remains one of the country’s biggest sources of income. Any drop in production directly impacts revenue and foreign exchange reserves.

Meanwhile, data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission shows a slightly different figure. When condensates are included, average production stands at 1.581 million barrels per day. This discrepancy reflects long-standing challenges in tracking and managing Nigeria’s oil output accurately.

Energy analysts warn that if theft, vandalism, and labor disputes persist, Nigeria may struggle to meet its revenue targets. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company has promised to address the issues. Efforts are already underway to boost security in the Niger Delta and attract more investment in upstream operations.

The government aims to raise production to 1.8 million barrels per day by the end of 2025. Achieving this goal will be key to stabilizing revenue, maintaining investor confidence, and supporting the nation’s economic outlook.
