Ibrahim Yekini, widely known by his stage name Itele D’Icon, is a Nigerian Yoruba actor, screenwriter, producer, and director whose intense, physically demanding action roles have made him one of the most recognisable names in Yoruba-language Nollywood.
Born Ibrahim Yekini Bakare, sources place his birth around January 1980, with roots in Lafenwa, Abeokuta North, Ogun State, though accounts differ on whether he grew up in Kano or Lagos. He began his acting journey in 1998 in the Iju Ishaga area of Lagos State, enrolling as an apprentice with the Folorunsho Adejobi Theatre Group, where he trained for roughly two years in traditional Yoruba storytelling and stagecraft before stepping in front of a camera.
Yekini made his Nollywood debut in 2000 in the film Dapo Tori Ti E, playing a criminal, a role that set the tone for the intense, morally complex characters that would become his trademark. After several years building experience in supporting roles, he moved into production, directing and starring in a film titled Itele, which gave him his enduring stage name, followed by Ekun Meta under the mentorship of director Don Richard, a project that brought him wider recognition.
His defining achievement came in 2019 with Return of Kesari, which he wrote, produced, and directed alongside Tope Adebayo, a Yoruba blockbuster that further established him as a filmmaker with genuine creative control over his storytelling, not just a performer. He won Best Actor in a Lead Role at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Lucifer, and has continued to build a body of work including Anini and Akoba.
Today, Itele D’Icon remains a defining figure in Yoruba action cinema, known for authentic, grassroots storytelling and physically committed performances that resonate strongly with audiences who have followed his rise from theatre apprentice to actor-director.
