Rita Edochie is a Nigerian actress, television presenter, and politician widely recognised for her recurring motherly roles across more than two hundred Nollywood films, and for her connection to one of the industry’s most prominent acting families.

Born on April 16, sources place her birth year between 1964 and 1968, in Onitsha, Anambra State, she was raised partly by an uncle before pursuing a degree in Mass Communication, with some accounts citing Enugu State University of Science and Technology and others Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. She married Tony Edochie, the younger brother of Nollywood legend Pete Edochie, in December 1990, a family connection she has said accelerated, though did not solely create, her decision to pursue acting professionally.

Edochie made her acting debut in the 1997 film Waterloo, directed by Teco Benson, playing a nurse, and quickly followed it with roles in Evil Men, Igodo, and August Meeting. She became known industry-wide for her ability to convincingly portray grief and maternal warmth on screen, appearing alongside veterans including Ngozi Ezeonu, Patience Ozokwor, and Ebele Okaro across a filmography that grew to include Abuja Boys, The Storm, and The Last Burial.

Beyond film, Edochie built a long career as a radio and television presenter with the Anambra State Broadcasting Service, and has been active in politics and peace advocacy, receiving the Ambassador for Peace Award from the Universal Peace Federation in 2016. Her contributions to Nollywood have earned her recognition including Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.

Edochie is the mother of four children, including actor and director Great Valentine Edochie, and remains a vocal, often outspoken figure within the extended Edochie family, regularly commenting on family and industry matters that keep her in the public conversation well into her fourth decade in Nollywood.
