Early Life
Mubarak Abdulkarim, known professionally as Mr442, was born on 13 September 1995 in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. He studied Sociology at the American University of Adonai in Benin Republic, an unusual academic path for a Hausa hip-hop artist that has occasionally featured in his public profile alongside his music career.
Career
Mr442 rose to prominence with his hit single “Zindir,” a track referencing Kannywood star Maryam Booth that drew significant attention across Northern Nigeria after his own staged fake arrest generated further buzz around the song. Known for blending rap with Afrobeat and for consistently provocative, attention-grabbing lyrics, he has built a reputation as one of Kaduna’s most talked-about hip-hop trendsetters, credited alongside Safara’u with discovering and mentoring several younger Kaduna-based artists.
His catalogue includes “Yinshi Ne,” “Mace” and “Money Movement” featuring Zinoleesky, alongside his 2024 hit “Bariki,” a collaboration with fellow Kaduna star Rumerh. He has continued releasing music into 2025 and 2026, including features on Usman Bee’s “SO” and a reunion with Rumerh on “Fame.” He is signed to Saucy Music and remains active on Instagram, where he shares updates on both his music and personal life.
In 2025, Mr442 and his manager were arrested in Maradi, Niger Republic, by the country’s border and migration control agency over an alleged attempt to obtain national passports, and were subsequently convicted and sentenced to eight months in prison. Speaking to Daily Trust after his release, he described the experience as life-changing and said it had deepened his commitment to his music career, promising to detail the experience in an upcoming song.
Personal Life
Beyond music, Mr442 has described himself as a businessman and farmer, balancing those ventures alongside his recording career.
With a career built on provocative hits, an eye for buzz-generating stunts and a growing list of collaborations, Mr442 remains one of the most closely watched trendsetters in Kaduna’s hip-hop scene.
