Gina Yashere, born Regina Obedapo Iyashere in London in 1974 to Nigerian parents, is a British comedian who has built a career spanning stand-up, British and American television, and writing. Long established on the UK comedy circuit, she gradually built a following that carried her into American audiences over the following decades.
Yashere’s biggest breakthrough came through Bob Hearts Abishola, the CBS sitcom she co-created with Chuck Lorre, centred on a Nigerian immigrant character. Beyond co-creating and writing for the show, Yashere also appears in a supporting role as Kemi, the best friend of lead character Abishola, played by fellow Nigerian actress Folake Olowofoyeku.
The show was notable for insisting the lead character be explicitly Nigerian rather than a generalised Black immigrant figure, a decision Yashere and her collaborators fought to protect, allowing Yoruba language and specific Nigerian cultural details to appear on American primetime television in a way rarely seen before.
Through Bob Hearts Abishola, Yashere has become one of the clearest examples of a Nigerian-heritage comedian shaping not just performance but the actual creative direction and cultural authenticity of a major American sitcom, rather than working solely as a hired performer within someone else’s vision.
