Renowned Nigerian musician and band leader Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, passed away on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada, at the age of 50. His family announced the news, and immediately, fans and colleagues began celebrating his remarkable life and career.

In an emotional tribute, his family described Akiin Shuga as more than just a musician; they emphasized that he served as a custodian of rhythm, culture, and performance spirit. Over more than three decades, he redefined live band leadership through grace, mastery, and purpose. Consequently, he became both an inspiration and an institution to countless admirers at home and abroad.
Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga overcame polio at age five. Despite physical challenges, he built one of Nigeria’s most celebrated live music careers. In 1998, he founded Shuga Band, which started performing at Pintos in Ikeja, Lagos. Over time, the band expanded into a 14-member ensemble, known for electrifying weddings, corporate functions, and state events.
Furthermore, through Shuga Entertainment, Akiin Shuga established a brand synonymous with discipline, class, and artistic excellence. In addition, he served as founding president of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON), advocating for professionalism and better welfare for musicians nationwide.
Ultimately, his legacy endures through Shuga Band, which continues to embody his vision of innovation and excellence in Nigeria’s entertainment scene. As his family stated, “Akinloye Tofowomo’s rhythm may have stopped, but his music will play forever.”
