Nigerian Grammy-winning artist Damini Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy, opened up about his experiences living abroad, particularly in the United States. He explained that although he appreciates some aspects of life in America, he never feels completely free there.
Burna Boy stressed that he experiences genuine freedom only in Nigeria, where he can live without constant restrictions or fear. While the U.S. offers opportunities and global exposure, it cannot replicate the comfort, ease, and sense of belonging he enjoys at home.
“I like freedom, and the definition of freedom is in my country,” he said. “I can never be fully free here, even if I wanted to. I’ve seen great people face jail for reasons I cannot understand. That’s not the life I want.”
He described his connection to Nigeria as deeper than nationality. The country provides him with identity, authenticity, and a supportive community that he cannot find elsewhere. Nigeria allows him to live boldly and creatively without fear of judgment or cultural limits.
