Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has released an emotional six-minute video statement addressing the December 29 car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of his two closest friends and team members. The video, titled “My Brother’s Keeper For Life,” was posted on Thursday, January 29, 2026, marking the first time the 36-year-old boxer has spoken in detail about the tragedy.

The accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his companions collided with a stationary truck. While Joshua sustained minor injuries, his personal trainer, Latif “Latz” Ayodele, and recovery therapist, Sina Ghami, were pronounced dead at the scene. Joshua described the incident as an:

“Unforeseen circumstance, that was out of all our control.”

Reflecting on the impact of the loss, Joshua said:

“We went back home, went to see our families and everything just got flipped upside on its head.”

He emphasized the closeness of the victims:

“They’re my brothers, they’re my friends first and foremost. We became housemates, we were living together.”

Joshua added:

“I’ve lost people before, but I don’t think I’ve lost people like that, my left and my right.”

On the topic of mortality, Anthony Joshua shared:

“One day my time will come, and I’m not scared either at all. It’s actually comforting knowing that I’ve got two brothers on the other side.”

He concluded by pledging to support the families of the deceased:

“The mission must go on. I understand my duty. I’m gonna do what’s right by them. I’m gonna do what’s right by their family.”

Investigations into the crash are ongoing, with the driver of the vehicle previously appearing in a Nigerian court on January 20 charged with dangerous driving.
