Early Life

Christopher Omenye, known professionally as Yung L, was born and raised in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. His mother was a major influence on his path into music, first introducing him to the church drummer and later to the church pianist, Meca-E of Square Records, who both taught him the fundamentals of playing instruments. He began drumming in church and at secondary school before going on to study at the University of Jos.

Career

While at university, Yung L began singing, rapping and performing at social events, joining a music group called Mac9, through which he performed songs by artists who influenced him, including Damian Marley. That grounding in reggae and dancehall would go on to shape his own sound as a solo artist. He went on to sign with Chocolate City Music, becoming part of the label’s roster of talent that grew out of Jos’s tightly knit music scene.

As a singer, songwriter and performer, Yung L has built a career centred on reggae and dancehall influences within the wider Nigerian music landscape, drawing on the sound he first developed performing Damian Marley covers as a university student in Jos.

Personal Life

Yung L has credited his mother and his early church mentors with shaping his musical foundation, an influence that continues to inform his reggae-leaning sound today.

With roots in Jos’s church and university music scenes and a career built on reggae and dancehall influences, Yung L remains one of the city’s notable musical exports.
