Deji Adeleke, renowned businessman and Pro-Chancellor of Adeleke University, has completed construction of a 1,250-megawatt power plant in Ajebamidele, Ondo State but the plant remains idle due to a lack of gas supply. Adeleke revealed the development during the 11th convocation ceremony of Adeleke University in Ede, Osun State.

Despite its massive potential to strengthen Nigeria’s failing power sector, the facility still awaits connection to the national gas grid. Without this critical link, the plant cannot begin generating electricity. Adeleke emphasized that once operational, the power station could employ over 2,000 engineers and technical professionals, offering significant job opportunities for young Nigerians.

He expressed deep concern over the situation, highlighting the irony of an idle energy facility while the nation continues to battle chronic power shortages. The prolonged delay not only halts power generation but also deprives thousands of employment and development opportunities.

This news comes as Nigerians face growing frustration over worsening electricity issues. Frequent blackouts, erratic supply, and inflated tariffs dominate public complaints. Recent plans by electricity regulators to increase tariffs have sparked outrage, with many questioning the justification for higher bills despite unreliable service.

Adeleke’s power plant represents a missed opportunity to address these challenges, especially at a time when the country desperately needs sustainable solutions. He urged relevant authorities to act swiftly and connect the plant to the gas infrastructure so it can begin serving the public good.
