The paternal family of late Afro-Fuji musician Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has accused his mother, Saidat Adeshina, of contributing to the illness that led to his death. The allegations emerged on Friday, January 23, during burial proceedings at the singer’s father’s compound in Ayetoro, Ogun State.
In a video captured at the funeral, two women claiming to be members of the Adeshina family said the singer’s seizure-related condition, locally called “Ògú Òru,” was not hereditary in their family. They alleged the illness appeared after his mother allegedly introduced him to multiple traditional healers.
“It’s in her family that they do have ‘Ògú Òru’; there is nothing of such in our own family,” one woman said.
“In Adeshina’s family we don’t have any sickness. We don’t have any ailments at all. Not until his mother started taking him to different spiritual doctors (herbalists).”
Destiny Boy passed away on January 18, 2026, under controversial circumstances that have sparked major social media debate. Before the burial, his mother addressed the public to clarify that he had battled neurological issues for nearly two years.
“He was my source of happiness, and I never stopped praying for him,” Saidat Adeshina said. “His celebrity status led us to keep his medical struggles private until his health significantly deteriorated.”
The burial in Ayetoro proceeded despite public tensions between the two sides of the family. Fans and the Nigerian music community continue to mourn the young artist.
