Nollywood actress, Eucharia Anunobi has opened up about the backlash she faced after starring in the 1996 Nollywood film Glamour Girls 2.
The veteran actress spoke about the experience during a recent appearance on The Honest Bunch Podcast. She explained that many viewers struggled to separate her real personality from the seductive character she portrayed in the film.
Eucharia Anunobi played Anita, a student who lures a wealthy married man away from his wife. According to the actress, the role sparked strong reactions from the public at the time.
“I faced a lot of backlash for my role in Glamour Girls 2. You know, at that time the Nigerian populace pretended that they don’t watch such movies. So, a lot of people were labelling me. They called me Sharon Stone, Mammy Water, Husband Snatcher.”
The actress said the label followed her for years and even affected how people treated her in social settings.
“A lot of people were like that leave your man with Eucharia, she’s going to take him away. It was crazy to the point that if women see me when they are with their men, they hold them tightly.”
Despite the criticism, Anunobi maintained that she was simply performing a scripted role. She also defended her presence on screen and rejected the negative perception that came with it.
“Well, I am very alluring. I can’t deny that because if I deny myself that means I am denying God.”
The actress also addressed the technical side of the film’s production. She explained that she was paid professionally for her work, including scenes that were considered provocative at the time.
Anunobi specifically mentioned the famous bathtub scene she performed alongside Zack Orji.
“Lots of Nollywood actors don’t earn what I earned for movie role 30 years ago.”
Her comments highlight how certain roles in Nollywood’s early years often shaped public perception of actors beyond the screen.
