Nigerian Afropop singer Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, popularly known as Iyanya, has opened up about why he remains single at 39. The “Kukere” hitmaker says emotional trauma and repeated public threats have shaped his views on relationships and commitment.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast released on 8 months ago, Iyanya explained that fame often turned his private relationships into public battles. He said misunderstandings with past partners frequently led to threats of taking their issues to blogs and social media.

“I’m not thinking of a serious relationship or marriage because I’m not mentally ready yet. If you are patient and stick around until I get to a convenient space, then we can do it.”

The singer also addressed claims that he does not take relationships seriously. He insisted that his emotions have always been genuine.

“I’m human too. It’s not possible for me to be in the music industry for 17 years and all I have been doing is playing games with women. Of course, I have emotions, so I’ve met people and genuinely fallen in love.”

However, he admitted that the repeated use of blogs as a threat deeply affected him.

“They always threatened me with going to the blogs whenever we had issues. That kind of made me develop commitment issues because it has happened several times.”

Iyanya concluded by saying that commitment is currently one of the hardest things for him to pursue. He also revealed that he has tried to embrace celibacy as a coping strategy but is struggling to maintain it.
