The search for justice in the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad is still ongoing. A Lagos High Court has scheduled July 2 to deliver its judgment in a case filed by the singer’s father, Joseph Aloba. He is challenging the legal advice that cleared several suspects linked to the case.

In February, a Yaba Magistrate Court discharged Naira Marley, Sam Larry, Prime Boy, and Pere Babatunde. This was based on the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions, which said the suspects had no case to answer.

However, Joseph Aloba was not satisfied with the decision. In March, he filed a lawsuit asking the court to review that advice and push for a fresh investigation. He believes the advice came too early, especially since the coroner’s inquest into his son’s death had not yet ended.

At the last hearing, Justice Taiwo Olatokun listened to final arguments. Wahab Shittu, representing Aloba, said the advice from the DPP was premature. He argued that it could weaken the outcome of the inquest.

The DPP’s legal team, led by Joke Amachree, disagreed. She explained that the suspects were discharged, not acquitted. That means if new evidence comes up, they can still be investigated. A legal officer from the DPP’s office also supported this point, stating the advice was lawful and followed due process.

Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His sudden death shocked fans and sparked calls for justice. As the July 2 court date approaches, many Nigerians are waiting to see what the court decides next.
