Karl Toriola, the CEO of MTN Nigeria, along with three other top executives, has been accused of avoiding court summons. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) said they have tried many times to serve legal papers but the executives have not responded.

At a recent court hearing in Abuja, the FCCPC’s lawyer, Nsitem Chizenum, told the judge, “We have made several efforts and we equally used the bailiff of this court to serve them, but it seems they were evading service, my lord.” None of the accused showed up in court, and no lawyers came on their behalf.

The FCCPC filed charges against MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, Tobechukwu Okigbo, and Ikenna Ikeme. They are accused of refusing to provide documents that were requested as part of an investigation. The commission said this refusal delays their work and breaks the law.

The court set a new date for the accused to appear on September 25, 2024. The FCCPC has also asked the police to help make sure they attend.

This is not the first time MTN and its CEO face legal issues. Earlier this year, the Nigerian Copyright Commission accused MTN of using music by artist Maleke Moye without permission. That case is still ongoing.
