The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is taking bold steps to restore public confidence after recent disruptions on the Abuja–Kaduna route. Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa has announced a four-day refresher training for all staff and confirmed a 95% salary increase to be paid before the end of 2025.

The announcements came during a staff meeting at Idu Station on September 19, 2025. Opeifa shared findings from the August 26 derailment, reviewed recovery efforts, and outlined safety measures. The refresher training, starting September 22, will help workers improve their skills and follow safety procedures more strictly.

“The investigation showed the need for strict compliance with operational rules,” Opeifa said. He added that safety must remain the NRC’s top priority, especially on the Abuja–Kaduna corridor.

On staff welfare, Opeifa confirmed the approved salary increment and urged workers to avoid strikes, warning that industrial actions disrupt national service delivery.

Since September 1, 2025, Opeifa has reshuffled NRC’s top management and created new offices such as Business Process & Efficiency, Customer Service, and the Statistician’s Office. These reforms aim to modernize operations, improve efficiency, and build public trust.

If maintained, these efforts could make the Nigerian Railway Corporation a stronger and more reliable railway system under the federal government’s infrastructure renewal drive.
