Mr Macaroni, born Adebowale Adedayo, is a Nigerian actor, comedian, and activist who has become one of the most commercially successful crossover stars in contemporary Nollywood, moving from viral comedy skits into major theatrical film roles.
Born Adebowale Babatunde Adedayo on May 3, 1993, in Lagos, Nigeria, into a large family of ten children, he is the son of a journalist father and an educationist mother. His path through higher education was unusually winding, moving between several universities including Houdegbe North American University and Afe Babalola University before he eventually earned a degree in Theatre Arts and Film Studies from Redeemer’s University in 2018.
Adedayo began his career as a conventional Nollywood actor, appearing in films and soap operas, before pivoting to online comedy when acting roles became scarce. His skits, built around recurring characters such as the sugar-daddy politician ‘Daddy Wa’ and the strict lecturer ‘Professor Hard-life’, quickly went viral, frequently featuring collaborations with major Nollywood names including Jim Iyke, Sola Sobowale, Bimbo Ademoye, and even veteran actor Pete Edochie.
His crossover back into mainstream cinema proved just as successful. Mr Macaroni has appeared in acclaimed films including Anรญkรบlรกpรณ, Freedom Way, and Lisabi: The Uprising, earning a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the AMVCAs for the latter and the TFAA Prize for Acting in 2025. He was named the second highest-grossing Nollywood actor of that year, and premiered two films at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024.
Beyond entertainment, Adedayo has become known for his outspoken political and social activism, notably encouraging youth voter participation during Nigeria’s 2023 elections. He received two honorary doctorates in 2023 and has helped launch the careers of several younger content creators, cementing his role as both an entertainer and an influential public figure.
