Nigerian singer and songwriter, Seyi Shay, has revealed how the passing of legendary Afrobeats star, Sound Sultan, deeply affected her music journey and led to her taking a step back from the industry.
In a recent interview on TVC, the “Irawo” crooner described Sound Sultan not just as a mentor, but also as a best friend and father figure. She explained that his death in 2021 came at a very painful time in her life, coinciding with her pregnancy. According to her, both experiences changed her perspective and pushed her to prioritize her peace of mind and mental health.
Seyi Shay recalled how Sound Sultan welcomed her when she first moved to Nigeria, giving her a place to stay with his family in FESTAC and personally introducing her to key players in the music scene. She admitted that losing him was devastating, especially since she was supposed to visit him in New York the weekend he passed. “I felt like I didn’t have the will to continue music without him,” she shared.
The singer also opened up about motherhood, noting that she chose to step away from the “toxic” nature of the industry to raise her daughter away from scrutiny. Her decision, she said, was about breaking free from negativity and focusing on her family.
Since her debut in 2011 with the hit single Irawo, Seyi Shay has remained one of Nigeria’s most talented voices. While she has been quieter in recent years, her honesty about her struggles has resonated with fans who admire her resilience. Many are now hopeful that this new chapter could mark the beginning of a stronger, refreshed Seyi Shay.
