Veteran Nigerian musician Seyi Sodimu has stirred fresh debate after saying Davido is the only Afrobeats superstar with the influence, popularity, and grassroots support to successfully contest and win a governorship election.

Seyi Sodimu made the statement on the What I Know podcast hosted by Korty EO, alongside Nollywood actress Shaffy Bello. During the discussion, he shared his views on the Afrobeats “Big 3” — Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy — and explained how their careers have shaped public perception in different ways.

He described Burna Boy as a dominant live performer who has mastered the stage through consistency and talent. Wizkid, he said, possesses a special quality that sets him apart and gives him a global presence. However, Sodimu maintained that Davido goes beyond entertainment and connects deeply with people across different social levels.

“The Afrobeats Big 3, each one is doing music for different reasons. Burna Boy has conquered the stage. And he is good. Wizkid is special. And Davido surpasses music,” Sodimu said.

He added that Davido’s influence could easily translate into political success due to his ability to mobilise large groups of people. “If Davido ran for governor today, he would win. But I don’t think Burna Boy could win as a governor,” he stated.

Sodimu’s remarks align with Davido’s political background and public involvement. The singer is the nephew of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and has taken part in political campaigns, including mobilising young voters. He also recently switched from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party in support of his uncle.

These actions have previously sparked speculation about Davido’s own political ambitions. Public figures such as former Senator Ben Murray-Bruce have openly endorsed the idea of him contesting for office.

As of early 2026, Davido remains the most followed Nigerian celebrity on Instagram. His influence continues to grow alongside the global rise of Afrobeats. Sodimu’s comments reflect a broader shift in Nigerian entertainment, where music stars are increasingly viewed as cultural leaders with potential influence in public life.
