Veteran Nollywood actress Shaffy Bello has revealed that she underwent tubal ligation 26 years ago. She explained that the decision was based on her preference for a small family.
The actress shared the personal story during a discussion about motherhood on her YouTube platform, Shaffy Bello TV, on Monday. During the conversation, she reflected on reproductive autonomy and long-term family planning.
Bello explained that the medical procedure was a proactive step. She wanted to permanently stop having children after reaching the family size she desired.
According to the actress, the decision was made despite her former husband’s wish for a larger family. However, she remained firm in her choice and prioritized her own vision for her life and household.
While reflecting on the decision and the surgical process, Bello shared a candid explanation.
“My ex-husband had to beg me to have another one. I didn’t want a lot of children. I wanted to stop. So they went through my navel, went in there, did what they needed to do, and they tied it up. That was it. They closed my eggs. I’ve always said to myself that after tying my tubes, if I get pregnant, I will feel like Mary, it’s a holy child.”
The actress further explained that the procedure was performed through her navel. During the surgery, doctors tied her fallopian tubes to prevent the release of eggs needed for pregnancy.
Bello emphasized that she never felt pressured by societal expectations to expand her family. For more than two decades, she has remained confident in her reproductive health decision.
Her revelation has also renewed conversations about women’s reproductive rights and family planning in the Nigerian media space.
Despite the debate, Bello continues to remain a respected figure in Nollywood. Through her digital platforms, she frequently shares insights on motherhood, career growth, and personal development.
