Spotify has confirmed a major leadership change that will take effect in January 2026. Founder and Chief Executive Officer Daniel Ek, who started the company in 2006 and built it into the world’s largest audio streaming platform, will step down from his role and transition to Executive Chairman.

The announcement came on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, with Spotify confirming that longtime executives Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström will become co-Chief Executive Officers. Both have been with the company for more than 15 years and have played key roles in Spotify’s global growth. Subject to shareholder approval, they will also join the company’s Board of Directors.

Ek explained that this change reflects how Spotify has already been operating behind the scenes. In recent years, he has handed much of the daily management and strategic leadership to Söderström and Norström. “This change simply matches titles to how we already operate. As Executive Chairman, I will focus on the long arc of the company,” he said.

Woody Marshall, Lead Independent Director of Spotify’s Board, noted that the transition has been carefully planned. “We have tremendous confidence in Alex and Gustav. They have been instrumental in driving Spotify’s success and enabling the company to lead our industry,” he said.

In a joint statement, Söderström and Norström emphasized continuity and stability. “When we became co-presidents nearly three years ago, we tasked our teams with building the best and most valuable experience anywhere. That ambition hasn’t changed,” they stated.

This leadership shift comes at a crucial time for Spotify as it expands beyond music into podcasts and audiobooks. The company continues to face competition from Apple, Amazon, and YouTube, but investors see this move as a way to ensure stability while keeping Ek’s founder-driven vision intact.
