Reality TV star Tacha Akide has caused serious reactions online after calling her generation of Nigerians “the dumbest and most cowardly.” The Big Brother Naija star, who moved to the UK recently, criticised young Nigerians for always wanting to leave the country instead of staying to fight for its progress.
In her post, Tacha compared her generation to older Nigerians who she said were braver. She mentioned that ex-president Buhari, when he was in his 20s, took part in a coup because he believed in something. She wondered what today’s youths are doing apart from “japa,” which is the slang for leaving Nigeria to find better opportunities abroad.
She said, “Listen, my generation of Nigerians is the dumbest and most cowardly.. funny how we blame the ones before us for ruining Nigeria, but at least they had the guts to fight, ex-president Buhari in his 20s was part of a coup fighting for what he believed in. But what’s today’s 20-year-olds up to? japa.”

Tacha argued that older generations were bold enough to enter politics, but today’s youths prefer to stand in visa queues and post tweets for fun. She added that even if people criticise her, she always uses her voice to speak about national issues.
She said the EndSARS protest in 2020 was the closest young Nigerians came to showing real courage. But after that, fear and trauma made everyone quiet again, and leaders know people will only make noise online and do nothing.
Tacha’s comments have started debates, with some calling her a hypocrite since she also left Nigeria. But she insists her message is to wake up youths who she feels are too scared to give up their comfort for their country.
