Yeni Kuti, the eldest daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has weighed in on the ongoing social media clash between her brother, Seun Kuti, and music star Wizkid.
Speaking on TVC’s Your View on Thursday, January 22, 2026, Yeni refused to criticize Wizkid. Instead, she called for unity and urged Nigerians to protect the country’s cultural image ahead of the upcoming Grammy Awards.
The rift began after several days of tension between Seun Kuti and “Wizkid FC,” the singer’s fanbase. The situation escalated when Wizkid responded to Seun’s criticisms by claiming he was bigger than Fela Kuti, sparking a major debate over the legacy of Afrobeat versus modern Afrobeats icons.
Despite the controversy, Yeni maintained a calm and conciliatory tone. She referenced her long-standing relationship with the singer.
“I love Wizkid a lot. You know, Wizkid is my padi now. We have come a long way together. I remember when we started that shrine, he was a backup singer at the shrine during Felabration.”
Addressing the insults exchanged online, Yeni said such conflicts only harm Nigeria’s image.
“Let’s mend fences, we are one people. We’re just about to go and celebrate our icon at the Grammy and you’re all doing as if you are trying to dent it. It’s not Fela or Fela family that you are denting, it’s all Nigeria.”
Yeni Kuti concluded by stressing that Fela’s continued relevance, 27 years after his death, proves his greatness.
“Whichever way you look at it, he’s an icon. Fight yourselves you that are alive and leave the man that has done his own and gone.”
