Early life
Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe, was born on 22 August 1958. He grew up on Inabere Street, Lagos Island, but hailed from the Ikorodu local government area of Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria.
He attended Jamaitul Islamia Primary School in Lagos and Children Boarding School in Osogbo for his early education. He proceeded to Adekanbi Commercial High School in Mile 12, Lagos, and later earned his West African School Certificate from Ifeoluwa Grammar School in Osogbo, Osun State.
Career
Baba Suwe began his acting journey in 1971 but gained widespread recognition after starring in the film Omolasan, produced in Obalende.
His popularity grew significantly in 1997 when he featured in Iru Esin, produced by Olaiya Igwe. Over the years, Baba Suwe acted in and produced numerous Nigerian movies, including Baba Jaiye Jaiye, which starred well-known actors Funke Akindele and Femi Adebayo, the son of veteran actor Adebayo Salami.
In 2011, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency accused him of cocaine trafficking; however, the Lagos High Court later ruled the allegation false and defamatory. His legal defense was led by the late Bamidele Aturu, a respected Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist.
Babatunde Omidina passed away on 22 November 2021, leaving behind a rich legacy in Nigerian comedy and film.
