Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has opened up about her past marriage, sharing the emotional strength it took to walk away despite heavy public judgment.
Speaking in a heartfelt conversation with media host Chude Jideonwo, the entrepreneur explained how living through a highly scrutinised relationship made her decision even harder. “People like to say it must not have been that bad because you didn’t die. But if someone comes back 10 minutes stronger, it unsettles others. Instead of learning from it, they see your strength as a threat,” Toke said, urging people not to judge without experiencing the journey themselves.
The outspoken star admitted that the public nature of her marriage played a huge role in her decision to leave. She confessed that if the relationship had been private, she might have considered staying longer. But the overwhelming scrutiny, coupled with how deeply she loved, made the situation unsafe for her well-being.
“Maybe I could have stayed if it wasn’t so public. But the way I loved this person would have been dangerous for me. If I stayed, how I felt would have consumed my entire life,” she explained.
Toke emphasised that choosing herself was the only way to preserve her future. Though walking away was not easy, she said protecting her peace and mental health mattered more than keeping up appearances.
