Tom Cruise has reached a major milestone in his long Hollywood career after receiving his first-ever Oscar. The global superstar was honoured with the Academy Honorary Award at the Governors Awards, and the moment quickly became one of the night’s biggest highlights. The room was filled with industry icons, yet all eyes shifted to Cruise when he stepped forward to accept the recognition many believed was overdue.
Filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu presented the award and added a lighthearted touch. He joked, “How does a person summarize the 45-year career of Tom Cruise in a four-minute speech? Mission impossible.” His remark drew laughter from the audience and set the tone for what became an unusually emotional moment for Cruise.
In his acceptance speech, Cruise reflected on the beginning of his relationship with cinema. He recalled being a young boy discovering the magic of film. “My love for cinema began at a very early age, as early as I can remember. I was just a little kid in a darkened theatre, and I remember that beam of light just cut across the room, and I remember looking up, and it seemed to be just exploding on the screen. Suddenly, the world was so much larger than the one that I knew.”
He also spoke about the global power of movies and their ability to connect people. “The cinema, it takes me around the world. It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways. And no matter where we come from, in that theatre, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, we dream together.”
Cruise then delivered the statement that defined the evening: “So making films is not what I do, it is who I am.”
He ended his speech with a light smile and a promise to keep supporting cinema. “Hopefully without too many more broken bones.”
