Legendary Hollywood director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, have died, according to family confirmation. A spokesperson said the family is heartbroken by the sudden loss.
Los Angeles police have opened an active investigation at Reiner’s home. Homicide detectives are treating the case as an apparent homicide. A law enforcement source told CNN that investigators interviewed a family member on Sunday evening. Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
Rob Reiner was 78 and stood among the most respected figures in American film and television. He first became famous as Archie Bunker’s son-in-law on the hit series All in the Family. That role helped launch a career that shaped popular culture for decades.
Reiner later became a celebrated film director. He directed classics such as When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, and A Few Good Men. These films influenced generations of filmmakers and audiences alike.
The Screen Actors Guild paid tribute to Reiner following his death. The union called him one of the most significant figures in entertainment history. SAG president Sean Astin noted Reiner’s nearly 60 years as a union member. He said Reiner’s films made people think, feel deeply, and laugh. Astin added that this emotional range defined Reiner’s lasting impact.
Michele Singer Reiner, who was 67, also built a strong and diverse career in Hollywood. She worked as a producer, actor, and photographer.
Michele Singer Reiner produced films including Shock and Awe and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released this year. She also acted in the Nora Ephron film Mixed Nuts. In addition, she worked as a photographer on projects such as Misery.
Singer Reiner earned an Emmy nomination for producing the documentary Albert Brooks: Defending My Life. She also produced God & Country, a documentary examining Christian nationalism in the United States.
Authorities have not released further details about the case. Police say they will continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Hollywood continues to mourn a creative partnership that left a lasting mark on film and television.
