Early Life

Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, known professionally as Carter Efe, was born on 29 September 2001 in Ogun State, Nigeria, into a family originally from Ughelli North in Delta State. He is the sixth of seven children. He lost his father, a police officer, in 2015, a loss that brought financial difficulty for his family. He attended Grace Group of Schools in Ogun State for his primary education before completing secondary school at Christ Apostolic Grammar School, also in Ogun State.

Career

Carter Efe began creating comedy content in 2019, sharing skits on Instagram and TikTok that quickly attracted a growing following, drawing inspiration from fellow comedian Sydney Talker. Known for his energetic delivery, exaggerated expressions and street slang, he became one of the most recognisable faces in Nigeria’s online comedy scene by 2021.

In 2022, Carter Efe crossed over into music, teaming up with singer Berri Tiga to release “Machala,” a homage to Afrobeats superstar Wizkid, who fans affectionately call by the same nickname. Released on 30 July 2022, the song became a nationwide sensation, debuting at number one on Apple Music Nigeria’s Top 100 and number two on the TurnTable Nigeria Top 100, while peaking at number 14 on the US Billboard Afrobeats chart. The record’s success, produced by Producer X, launched Carter Efe into mainstream music alongside his comedy career, though it also sparked a public credit dispute with Berri Tiga that was later resolved. He has continued releasing music, including the single “Oluchi,” while remaining active as a livestreamer, comedian and social media influencer.
