Early Life
Adekunle Gold holds a Higher National Diploma in Arts and Design from Lagos State Polytechnic. He developed a passion for music at a young age, drawing inspiration from King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey. At 15, he wrote his first song and later joined his church’s junior choir.
Career
Adekunle’s music career took off after he went solo in 2014, leaving behind a group he had formed with a school friend. He earned the nickname “King of Photoshop” after sharing a humorous edited image of himself hugging Tiwa Savage on social media.
In December 2014, he released a highlife cover of One Direction’s “Story of My Life,” titled “Sade.” The song received critical acclaim and earned a nomination for Best Alternative Song at The Headies 2015.
In March 2015, after signing with YBNL Nation, Adekunle released his official single “Orente.” His debut studio album, Gold, arrived in July 2016 and debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard World Albums chart.
The album featured productions by Pheezl, Masterkraft, B Banks, and others. After his contract with YBNL expired, Adekunle formed his band, “The 79th Element,” named after the atomic number of gold.
In 2020, he released Afro Pop Vol. 1, followed by Catch Me If You Can in 2022, showcasing collaborations with various producers. In March 2023, Adekunle signed with Def Jam Recordings, marking a significant step in his career.
Personal life
In January 2019, Adekunle married fellow Nigerian artist Simi after five years of dating. They welcomed their daughter, Deja, in May 2020. In July 2022, he publicly shared his battle with sickle cell disease, a struggle that inspired his song “5 Star.” He continues to use his platform to raise awareness about the condition through his foundation, the Adekunle Gold Foundation.
