Early Life

Monalisa Chinyere Chinda was born on 13 September 1974 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, to an Ikwerre father and an Igbo mother. She is the first of six children in her family, with two brothers and three sisters. She attended Army Children’s School, GRA for her primary education, before proceeding to Archdeacon Crowther Memorial Girls’ School in Elelenwo, Port Harcourt, for secondary school. She went on to earn a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt, developing her craft while still an undergraduate.

Career

Monalisa Chinda made her professional acting debut in 1996 in the Nigerian movie ‘Pregnant Virgin’ while still a student. She also featured in stage productions, including ‘Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again’ by Ola Rotimi and ‘The Fight To Stop Female Circumcision’ by Amatu Braid. After graduating in 2000, she starred in ‘Above the Law’ and quickly became one of Nollywood’s leading actresses through the early 2000s.

Her profile rose further in 2007 when she began appearing in the popular television soap opera ‘Heaven’s Gate.’ She has since featured in more than 300 movies, including ‘Royal Grandmother,’ ‘Critical Truth,’ ‘Now and Forever,’ ‘Kiss and Tell,’ ‘Keeping My Man,’ ‘The Unthinkable’ and ‘Therapist.’ Her portrayal in ‘Now and Forever’ (2009), exploring the complexities of relationship dynamics, is regarded as one of her most memorable performances and earned her significant critical acclaim.

In 2011, Monalisa Chinda expanded into production, debuting as Executive Producer on the Royal Arts Academy movie ‘Kiss & Tell,’ co-produced with Emem Isong and directed by Desmond Elliot. In 2012, she became one of the first four Nollywood actors to be featured on the cover of Hollywood Weekly Magazine, and the same year was crowned Face of Port Harcourt – Carnival Queen in her home state.

In November 2014, she moved into broadcasting with her own talk show, ‘You & I with Monalisa,’ airing on stations including AIT, TVC and Channels Television. She also writes a weekly column, ‘Monalisa Code,’ in the Saturday edition of The Sun Newspaper, discussing social and relationship issues. She continues to support the industry as a consultant with the Royal Arts Academy, mentoring new talent, and has partnered with Goge Africa to promote local tourism.

Monalisa Chinda has been recognised throughout her career, winning Best Actress at the 2009 Afro Hollywood Award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival.

Personal Life

Monalisa Chinda was previously married to Segun Dejo Richards; the marriage produced a daughter, Tamar, before ending in 2009. She remarried in 2016 to Victor Tonye Coker, a Nigerian-Sierra Leonean businessman. Beyond her entertainment career, she is an active philanthropist and entrepreneur, running the Arise Monalisa Foundation, which focuses on women and children’s empowerment initiatives.

With a career spanning nearly three decades across acting, production and broadcasting, Monalisa Chinda remains one of Nollywood’s most versatile and enduring leading ladies.
