Early Life

Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, better known as Phyno, is a native of Anambra State but was born and raised in Enugu State. His stage name, Phyno, comes from the word “phenomenal,” a nickname given to him by a friend during his secondary school days.

Phyno developed an interest in music production while in secondary school. Although he initially aspired to become a pilot, he was encouraged to pursue a career in medicine instead.

During his time in secondary school, Phyno learned to play the drums and piano, and he created his own versions of the recordings he listened to.

Phyno studied public administration at the Institute of Management and Technology in Enugu, where he began earning from his music career during his second year. He has mentioned in interviews that one of his role models in the music industry is Mr. Raw.

Career And Achievements

Phyno began his rapping career in 2010 and later relocated to Lagos to further pursue his music dreams.

In 2012, he began recording his debut studio album No Guts No Glory, which featured collaborations with several renowned artists, including Stormrex, Omawumi, Olamide, P-Square, Timaya, Flavour N’abania, Mr Raw, M.I, Ice Prince, and Runtown. The album was mostly recorded in Igbo and Nigerian Pidgin.

The album’s lead single, Ghost Mode, featuring Olamide, was released on 25 September 2012. The track won Best Collabo at both The Headies 2012 and 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

The music video for Ghost Mode, directed by Clarence Peters, was released on 7 December 2012.

Phyno’s second single, Man of the Year (Obago), was released on 23 March 2013 and went on to win Best Rap Single at the 2013 Headies Awards.

Phyno also performed during the 2013 Star Music Trek tour and the Hennessy Artistry Club Tour, sharing the stage with major artists like D’banj, Burna Boy, and Chidinma.

Phyno’s third album 2 Kings, a collaboration with Olamide, was released in 2015. In 2019, Phyno announced plans to release his third studio album Deal With It, which features tracks like Agu and The Bag alongside prominent artists.
