Omah Lay, born Stanley Omah Didia on May 18, 1997, hails from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Raised in a musically inclined family, his grandfather played instruments for the renowned Celestine Ukwu, and his father was a drummer. Omah Lay attended Comprehensive High School and later the University of Port Harcourt.

Career

Omah Lay began his musical journey in a rap group under the moniker “Lil King.” At 16, he transitioned into songwriting and production. In 2019, he embarked on a solo career, releasing singles like “Do Not Disturb” and “Hello Brother.” That same year, he signed with the KeyQaad record label and began working on his debut EP, Get Layd. The EP, released in May 2020, featured hits like “Bad Influence” and “You,” both of which gained significant traction, with “Bad Influence” becoming the most streamed Nigerian song on Apple Music by the end of 2020. The EP topped the Nigerian Apple Music charts, and all its tracks reached the top 15.

In November 2020, Omah Lay released his second EP, What Have We Done, which also achieved commercial success. In 2022, he released his debut studio album, Boy Alone, which received critical acclaim. The album was followed by a deluxe edition in 2023. Omah Lay’s singles “Understand,” “Attention,” and “Soso” have further solidified his presence in the music industry.​

Omah Lay has been recognized with several accolades, including the Next Rated award at the 2020 Headies Awards. He was also featured in Apple’s Africa Rising Campaign and included in BBC Radio 1Xtra’s “Hot for 2021” list. In 2023, he surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify for all his music.

In 2024, Omah Lay embarked on the European leg of his Boy Alone Tour. During a performance in London, he invited a female fan on stage to dance, which drew criticism when her boyfriend left the venue in disappointment. Despite this, Omah Lay continued to release new music, including the single “Holy Ghost” and a remix featuring French DJ and producer Martin Solveig. The remix quickly gained popularity, topping African streaming platforms with over 100 million streams.
