A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded at Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah, where 22-year-old college basketball player Deng Mayar lost his life in a drowning accident.
Mayar had been swimming with his friend, Sa Mafutaga, when the incident occurred. As both men encountered difficulties in the water, bystanders quickly assisted Mafutaga to shore. In a brave effort, Mafutaga attempted to go back and rescue Mayar, but the attempt proved unsuccessful.
Emergency crews responded promptly, launching a thorough search that extended late into the night. Authorities deployed a submersible robot, which eventually located Mayar’s body around 11:00 p.m.
Before his untimely death, Deng Mayar had played for the University of North Dakota’s men’s basketball team, the Fighting Hawks. In April 2025, he transferred to the University of Nebraska Omaha to join the Omaha Mavericks, where he was preparing for a promising new chapter in his athletic and academic career.
Known for his dedication on the court and his positive influence off it, Mayar’s death has left his family, friends, and teammates in deep mourning. The basketball community has expressed shock and sadness at the loss of such a young and talented individual.
