Nigerian rapper Ice Prince Zamani has opened up about the deep pain he still feels over the death of his South African friend and colleague, AKA.
Speaking on the G2G Podcast, Ice Prince shared that their friendship ended with a misunderstanding that was never resolved, something that continues to haunt him to this day.
The issue stemmed from AKA’s heated Twitter comments during the 2019 xenophobic attacks in South Africa. At the time, Ice Prince called him out publicly, which many assumed was a beef between the two rappers. Looking back, Ice Prince admitted he wished they had settled things while AKA was still alive.
“I wish we got to speak about it because we never. And it hurt me so bad because that’s my friend. AKA wasn’t just an artist I collaborated with—he has been to my house in Lagos a couple of times,” Ice Prince revealed.
The “Oleku” hitmaker went further to say he has asked God for forgiveness for not making peace with AKA before his tragic death. He also explained that he often sees his late friend in prayer.
“Sometimes when I’m praying, I see him there. So, I know we are at peace. I know he looks out for me as one of my homeboys in heaven,” he said emotionally.
AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes, was shot dead outside a Durban restaurant on February 10, 2023. His shocking murder sent waves of grief across Africa’s music scene. The trial into his death is still ongoing.
