Ghanaian Afro-fusion star Gyakie, born Jackline Acheampong, has released her highly anticipated debut album After Midnight, marking a major milestone in her blossoming career.
Known for her soothing vocals and heartfelt storytelling, Gyakie delivers a 17-track body of work that blends Afrobeats, R&B, and highlife, capturing the essence of late-night emotions—reflection, spirituality, and celebration. The project, inspired by the quiet hours after midnight, showcases her artistic growth and her ability to weave personal experiences into relatable, as well as genre-fluid music.
A Journey from EPs to Debut Album
After Midnight follows Gyakie’s successful EPs Seed (2020) and My Diary (2022), which gave fans hits like Forever and Flames featuring Davido. The album reflects her maturation as a songwriter and vocalist, drawing from her Ghanaian heritage. Her father Nana Acheampong is also a celebrated highlife legend. While also infusing R&B, hip-hop, and pop influences.
Gyakie revealed that most of the album was written and recorded in the stillness of the night, a period she describes as fueling her creativity with “peace, quiet, and serenity.”
Themes and Duality
The project explores dual moods: the sacred and the scandalous, the reflective and the reckless. From moments of introspection rooted in her family’s tradition of midnight prayers to the vibrant energy of nightlife, the album also balances spirituality with playfulness.
Tracks like Sankofa deliver soulful reflections on emotional truth, while House Party featuring Young Jonn radiates infectious dance energy.
