The streets of New York came alive as Nigerians from across the United States gathered to celebrate the country’s 2025 Independence Day in grand style. The annual parade, which took place along Madison Avenue from East 38th Street to East 24th Street, turned midtown Manhattan into a vibrant display of culture, music, and national pride.
Organised by the Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN) in partnership with the Consulate General of Nigeria in New York, the event attracted a large crowd of spectators and participants. From traditional dance troupes to cultural associations, youth groups, and professional bodies, the parade was a beautiful reminder of Nigeria’s diversity and unity.
Nigerian flags waved proudly in the air as different groups marched to the sound of Afrobeat music, drums, and chants of “Happy Independence.” Floats decorated with green and white, colourful attire, and performances by local artists made the event a true cultural spectacle. The celebration continued at Madison Square Park, where guests enjoyed live music, fashion exhibitions, and authentic Nigerian food. Popular singer Bella Shmurda thrilled the crowd with an energetic performance that got everyone dancing.
Several dignitaries graced the occasion, including Nigeria’s Consul General in New York, Abubakar Jidda, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, and Acting Ambassador to the U.S., Samson Itegboje. In his remarks, Jidda praised the Nigerian community for showcasing the country’s beauty and talent to the world, saying the event strengthens ties between Nigeria and the United States.
OAN President Olutomi Aregbesola described the parade as a celebration of identity and resilience, while the parade’s Chairman, Olayinka Dan-Salami, urged for greater support to make future editions even bigger.
The 2025 Independence Day Parade once again proved that wherever Nigerians go, their spirit, energy, and culture shine brightly.
