Uche Nancy is a Nigerian actress, costume designer, and film producer whose career trajectory from costumier to prolific producer has made her one of the more distinctive success stories in Nollywood’s behind-the-scenes ecosystem, and whose four daughters have followed her into the industry.

Born Uche Nancy on either May 2 or March 3, 1974, in Ufuma, Anambra State, she entered Nollywood in the late 1990s as a costume designer, working on notable productions including Girls Cot and World Apart. Her eye for detail and years of collaboration with established producers gradually drew her toward filmmaking herself, and she went on to found her own production outfit, Uche Nancy Studio.

As a producer, Nancy has been behind more than 20 films, including Buga in Pounds and Dollars, The Lamb, Best of Enemies, Dirty Diamond, Boss Lady, and Not My Queen, collaborating with major Nollywood names including Mercy Johnson, Angela Okorie, and the late Muna Obiekwe. She has said her move into production was partly driven by a desire to create a safer, more respectful working environment for young actresses in the industry.

Beyond producing, Nancy has taken on acting roles in films including The Seed, Proof of Life, and Gallant Babes, adding a performing dimension to a career built primarily behind the camera. Her contributions have been recognised with the Best Costume Designer award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2016, the Best Producer of the Year honour from the African Movie Academy Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nollywood Creative Arts Awards in 2021.

Nancy is the mother of four daughters from her marriage to Mr Nnebe, all of whom have pursued acting careers of their own, most notably Sonia Uche and Chinenye Nnebe, both established Nollywood actresses in their own right, making the Uche Nancy household one of the more prominent multi-generational family names in the industry.
