Early Life

Ibrahim Abiodun Chatta was born on 13 October 1970 in Bacita, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria, into a large polygamous Muslim family of fourteen children. His mother, who was originally from Modakeke in Osun State, passed away after a long battle with diabetes. Chatta completed his basic education at St Bridget’s Catholic Basic School in Bacita before proceeding to a secondary school in Niger State, which he left in the third grade due to peer pressure, ending his formal education early. Before becoming an actor, he worked as a bus driver to support himself and his family.

Career

Ibrahim Chatta’s passion for drama began early and never left him. He got his start in theatre in the mid-1990s, developing his craft on stage before transitioning into the Yoruba film industry, where his emotional delivery, deep voice and commanding screen presence set him apart. Despite his limited formal education, Chatta taught himself much of what he needed to know, going on to become one of Nollywood’s most respected actors, producers and directors.

Over a career spanning three decades, Chatta has won numerous honours, including the Best of Nollywood Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2012, Best Supporting Actor in a Yoruba Film for ‘Ifa Iwa’ in 2013, Best Actor of the Year (Yoruba) at the City People Movie Awards in 2019, and Best Actor at the Dallas International Yoruba Movie Awards in 2021. He is also a singer and songwriter, further extending his creative range beyond acting.

Personal Life

Ibrahim Chatta has been married more than once, including an earlier marriage to fellow actress Olayinka Solomon that ended amid mutual allegations between the two. He has spoken openly about the challenges of his personal life alongside his decades-long career in front of the camera.

From a childhood without formal schooling to becoming one of Yoruba cinema’s most decorated actors, Ibrahim Chatta’s story remains one of Nollywood’s most compelling examples of self-made success.
