Early Life
Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, professionally known as Ali Baba, was born on 24 June 1965 in Agbarha-Otor, Delta State, Nigeria, into the royal family of Agbarha Otor. He is the first son of several children, and spent his first eight years in Warri, Delta State. His father was a retired soldier who served in Lagos. He attended Command Secondary School in Ipaja, Lagos State, and later Ibru College in Agbarha-Otor, Delta State, before proceeding to Ambrose Alli University.
Career
Ali Baba began his comedy career in 1991, becoming one of the earliest and most influential figures to professionalise stand-up comedy in Nigeria. Over more than three decades, he has built a reputation as the “godfather” of Nigerian comedy, widely credited with helping establish the structure and business of live comedy shows in the country and paving the way for the generations of comedians who followed him. He continues to work as a stand-up comedian, master of ceremonies and actor, remaining a respected elder statesman figure within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
In recent years, Ali Baba has remained a prominent commentator on the Nigerian entertainment industry, including through appearances on podcasts such as Nedu Wazobia’s “The Honest Bunch,” where he has spoken candidly about the finances and growth of newer generations of comedians, including revealing that YouTube comedian Mark Angel earns as much as $300,000 monthly, one of several insights he has shared about the modern comedy business.
Personal Life
Ali Baba is married to Mary Akpobome. He remains one of the most respected voices in Nigerian entertainment, often sought out for commentary and perspective on the industry’s evolution.
