Early Life
Nathaniel Bassey was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and hails from Ikot Ofon Ikono in the Uyo local government area of Akwa Ibom State, in the South-South region of Nigeria. His father, Mr. E. Joshua Bassey, was a minister in the Apostolic Church Bashua Assembly. Nathaniel studied International Relations and Politics at the University of Lagos before continuing his political studies in London. Additionally, he attended Middlesex University Summer School, where he studied music.
Nathaniel married Sarah Bassey in 2013 after knowing each other for 12 years prior to their wedding.
Career
Nathaniel began his musical journey in the church and later joined the Rhodes Orchestra, where he played the trumpet for two years. In 2004, he composed a song during a visit to Stella Obasanjo, the late wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. That same year, he featured in the album “New Jazz Stew Project: Revelation,” collaborating with notable jazz artists such as Wole Oni and Yinka Davies.
In 2008, Nathaniel released his debut album, Elohim, recorded and mixed in Cape Town, South Africa. The album received critical acclaim, particularly for the hit track “Someone’s Knocking at the Door,” a soft-rock tune that attracted attention both locally and internationally.
Nathaniel has played a leading role in major Nigerian Christian events, including headlining at The Experience in 2018.
In June 2017, Nathaniel initiated the #HallelujahChallenge, encouraging believers worldwide to worship God for an hour from midnight to 1:00 am. He streams the challenge on social media platforms and invites others to join in worship. The event quickly gained popularity, amassing over 600,000 views within the first month.
