Early Life

Born as Aituaje Iruobe on September 5, 1980, in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria, Waje’s journey into music was anything but conventional. She hails from a family of six and grew up in a home that appreciated music, although not professionally. Waje’s father was a local preacher, and her mother was a teacher. Waje love for music began early, and she was inspired by the soulful voices of artists like Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin.

Waje attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where she graduated with a degree in Social Works. However, it was her passion for music that eventually led her to become a leading figure in Nigeria’s music scene.

Vocal consistency belongs to the singer Waje. Her anonymous presence on the 2008 smash hit ‘Do Me‘ by Psquare led to amateur sleuths uncovering the woman behind the hook.

Waje has a knack for showing up in ‘the best of’ discographies, especially that of the class of 2008. Her duet with M.I, ‘One Naira,’ is hands down one of the best love song collabos. She is critical to the blossoming of the R&B genre in the late noughties (reference – ‘Thief My Kele‘ [feat. Oladele & Waje] by Banky W).

Waje can stand on her own. Her 2013 hit single ‘I Wish‘ is a soulful Reggae song that carries the pain of heartbreak. Waje’s self-titled first album remains one of the best contemporary LPs.

Career Achievements

Waje’s career began to take flight in the mid-2000s, when she became known for her powerful voice. She gained widespread recognition when she featured on the track “Do Me” by P-Square in 2007, showcasing her vocal prowess. The success of this collaboration helped her break into the Nigerian music industry. Her debut album W.A.J.E was released in 2013, a collection that spanned different genres from Afrobeat to soul and R&B.

Some of her notable tracks include “I Wish,” “Grateful,” and “Oko Mi.” Her music not only explores themes of love and heartbreak but also emphasizes empowerment, particularly for women. Waje’s distinct voice has earned her recognition as one of Nigeria’s leading female vocalists.
