Early Life
Oluwatobi Wande Ojosipe, known professionally as Wande Coal, was born on October 18, 1985, in Lagos Island, Lagos State, Nigeria. Raised by Chief Ibukun Olufunto and Omolara Oluwayemisi Ojosipe, he is the first of two children. He attended Staff Nursery and Primary School in Ijanikin and completed his secondary education at Federal Government College, Ijanikin. Wande later earned a degree in Human Kinetics from the University of Lagos.
Career
Wande Coal began singing in his church’s teenage choir and first entered the entertainment scene as a dancer. In 2006, he signed with Don Jazzy’s Mo’ Hits Records and featured on D’banj’s RunDown Funk U Up album. His breakout single “Ololufe” from the Mo’ Hits Allstars’ Curriculum Vitae project became an instant classic.
In 2009, he released Mushin 2 Mo’ Hits, which gained popularity in Nigeria, the UK, and the U.S. He won the Best R&B/Pop Single at the 2010 Headies and African Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards.
Following the split between Don Jazzy and D’banj, Wande Coal joined Mavin Records in 2012 but exited in 2013. That same year, he launched his own label, Black Diamond Entertainment, and dropped the single “Baby Face.” He released his second album, Wanted, in 2015, followed by singles like “Tur-Key Nla,” “Again,” and “Come My Way.” In 2022, he featured on Olamide’s hit “Hate Me” and re-released Mushin 2 Mo’ Hits.
Wande Coal’s smooth vocals, hit-making ability, and evolution as an artist have cemented his status as a legend in Nigerian pop music.
