Popular media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, known as Daddy Freeze, has stated that Wizkid cannot yet be compared to the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
He shared his views during a video broadcast on Wednesday. According to him, Fela’s legacy goes far beyond music. He argued that Wizkid must first demonstrate a strong commitment to social activism before any valid comparison can be made.
“Until Wizkid is ready to stand up and stone government,
he shouldn’t compare himself to Fela.
Did you know that Fela was released from prison just to prevent him from dying there?
They released him to go and die at his home because they knew his death would spark an uproar if he died in the prison.”
Daddy Freeze stressed that Fela’s life and music were inseparable from his role as a freedom fighter. He recalled the circumstances surrounding Fela’s imprisonment in 1995, noting that his influence was powerful enough to intimidate the government of the time.
He added that Fela was not a troublemaker but a revolutionary figure. According to him, it is impossible to talk about Fela without acknowledging everything he stood for. He emphasized that Fela’s activism and music went hand in hand and could not be separated.
This commentary follows a series of controversial social media posts in which Wizkid claimed he was “bigger than Fela.” The statement has triggered backlash from the Kuti family, including Seun Kuti and Motunrayo Kuti.
The debate has divided the Nigerian entertainment industry. While some fans point to Wizkid’s global streaming success, critics like Daddy Freeze argue that numbers alone do not equal the historical and political weight of Fela’s legacy.
Wizkid has made no comment yet in regards to the Backlash from Daddy Freeze.
