In a major move to create a safer online space for its citizens, the FG has announced the shutdown of more than 13 million social media accounts. This decisive action comes after a “Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report” revealed that a vast number of accounts were violating the guidelines by posting offensive content. Key social media companies, including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok, have been actively collaborating with the government on this initiative.

The government’s joint effort, led by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), also resulted in the removal of nearly 59 million pieces of offensive content. Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s director of corporate communications, highlighted the significance of the reports submitted by the platforms, stating that they provide “valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns.” This collaboration is a significant step towards a more secure digital environment for Nigerian users.

The Code of Practice is a framework designed to ensure that large online platforms operating in Nigeria not only comply with local laws, but also prioritize the safety and well-being of their users. Umar emphasized that “building a safer digital space requires sustained collaboration and engagement among all stakeholders.” This achievement underscores Nigeria’s commitment to reinforcing online safety and holding digital platforms accountable, ensuring a more responsible and trustworthy internet experience for everyone. The ongoing efforts are set to promote a more positive and secure online community for all Nigerians.
